Organic Antifreeze FAQ

Everything you need to know about mixing, frost protection, applications, storage and handling.

Mixing & handling

What is the recommended mixing ratio?

For most applications, we recommend mixing 50% VAKE with 50% water. This provides reliable frost protection while helping maintain the stability of the solution over time.

What happens if I use too little VAKE?

A mixture that is too diluted can increase the risk of biological growth and may reduce the product’s performance. Remember that residual water left in tanks, pipes, water heaters or engine systems will further dilute the mixture.

How should I mix VAKE with water?

Use room-temperature or warm water and mix thoroughly until the solution is completely homogeneous. The liquid should appear evenly mixed, without visible streaks.

Frost protection & concentration

How does VAKE protect at very low temperatures?

At a 50/50 mixture, VAKE provides expansion-free protection down to –70°C. The liquid may begin to freeze at approximately –28°C to –30°C, but it is designed not to expand in the same way as water, helping protect pipes and tanks from bursting.

How can I check the concentration with a refractometer?

VAKE is glycol-free, but the Propylene Glycol (PG) scale can be used as a reference when checking concentration. A reading of approximately –45°C on the PG scale corresponds to a 50/50 VAKE mixture.

VAKE / WaterApprox. PG scale readingProtection
30 / 70–27°CApprox. –9.5°C
40 / 60–36°CApprox. –18°C
50 / 50–45°CFreeze point approx. –28 to –30°C / expansion-free to –70°C

Applications & compatibility

What systems can I use VAKE for?

VAKE is suitable for winterizing water systems, toilets, septic tanks and potable water systems.

Can VAKE be used in potable water systems?

Yes. VAKE can be used to winterize potable water systems. Before putting the system back into use, flush it thoroughly with fresh water.

Why is a 50/50 mixture important for toilets and septic tanks?

These systems have greater exposure to oxygen and biological contamination. A 50/50 mixture helps provide reliable protection throughout storage.

Can VAKE be used as a permanent engine coolant?

No. VAKE Organic Antifreeze is intended for winterization, not as a permanent coolant in an operating engine. Always follow the engine manufacturer’s requirements for coolant during operation.

Storage & environment

How long can unopened VAKE be stored?

Unopened VAKE has a shelf life of 24 months when stored in a cool, dark place.

How long can I keep VAKE after opening?

Once opened, we recommend using the product within 6 months.

Why can the green colour fade over time?

VAKE gets its green colour from natural chlorophyll. UV exposure can cause the colour to fade, but this is only a visual change and does not affect frost protection or product performance.

Can I save and reuse diluted VAKE next season?

No. Diluted VAKE should not be stored or reused between seasons. Prepare a fresh mixture when winterizing the system.

Is VAKE biodegradable?

Yes. VAKE is highly biodegradable and achieved 82% biodegradation within 20 days according to OECD 301D testing.
